Promotion all that matters for Still as history looms

Hatters boss John Still wasn’t paying any special attention to the fact his side could become record makers during tomorrow’s Skrill Premier clash with Wrexham at Kenilworth Road, writes Mike Simmonds.

Should Town avoid defeat, it will take their unbeaten League run to a mighty 20 games, beating the record set twice in the 1960s.

But that was immaterial to Still, who has his mind set on only one thing this year, promotion.

He said: “I actually don’t know how many games we’ve gone unbeaten in the League, because the only thing that interests me is get enough points to win promotion, that’s all it is.

“If we broke 100 records or no records, it’s not going to bother me now.

“At the end of the season, I can say ‘that was good we did that’, but the only record that we want is the record that says that we’ve won promotion.”

Standing in Town’s way of history are a Wrexham side who have struggled badly this season, sitting in 13th, already 21 points behind Hatters.

As always though, Still wasn’t reading anything into the Red Dragons faltering league position as he knows the danger when former Football League clubs come to town.

He said: “Don’t let anyone be fooled, Luton supporters for arguments sake, are desperate to get out of this league and I understand that.

“I’m sure if we spoke to Cambridge and spoke to Wrexham fans and Lincoln fans and all of the former League clubs, they want the same, of course they do.

“When former Football League clubs play each other they’re big games and they always have a little bit more bite to them.”

Despite Town’s superb form, and a stat that sees them yet to lose a league match with 11 players on the field at the final whistle, Still didn’t take anything for granted ahead of tomorrow.

He added: What I’ve learned is, I don’t expect anything. I know it sounds silly but I don’t expect to win, I just expect when the game comes up to try and be as ready as I can for that game

“I’ve heard it’s record breaking or record equalling, but I don’t go into the next game expecting.

“All I know is the next game, we’ve got to be right bang on it and I know if we are right bang on it, we’re a match for any team, home and away.

“But football being football, I’m going to use that well used expression, you can only control the controllables.

“Sometimes you can be drawing 0-0 and the referee might give two penalties that were never penalties, you can’t control that.

“We conceded an own goal in the FA Trophy, you can’t control deflections, but what I do know is that if we go out prepare for every game, we have an opportunity to win.”
