Bedford residents kick off after council gives wheelie bin advice
Some residents seem to have taken umbrage online after the council pointed out items incorrectly placed in orange-lidded recycling bins.
In what was a rather well-mannered post on the council’s Facebook page – aimed and raising awareness about what most residents already know – some people were far from happy.
In the last week, rubbish crews had found the following items incorrectly placed in the orange-lidded recycling bins:
A greasy, food-soiled pizza box

Wood
A plastic bag of household waste
Soft plastics
A full black bin liner
One miffed resident clapped back: “Would be nice if you held yourselves to some standards and were penalised when you screwed it up.”
Another added: “It's £250 a month for me to sort out rubbish.”
While a third wrote: “Can you explain why the recycling men refuse to take the cardboard when you’ve put it out in the morning and it’s raining during the day WHEN it’s already out.
“Are we supposed to sit and watch out the window all day for them to arrive so we can run out with all of the extra cardboard? Because now we have two weeks to wait until our bins are taken and they’re already full of cardboard again.”
But the council stuck to its guns and replied: “For very little effort you really can help make a big difference – locally, and for the wider world.
“Working together over the last six months, local residents have reduced the waste that goes in black bins by over 3,000 tonnes. This has been achieved through lowering the waste they produce, and using the recycling and food waste bins – it has a real impact and you can help too.”
