Inconsistent Bedford Blues suffer second half capitulation at Doncaster Knights

Second row star Alex Woolford believes inconsistent Bedford Blues need to get back to doing what they are best at as they suffered a second half nightmare in Saturday's 50-12 defeat at Doncaster Knights.

Woolford now wants to see players right those wrongs in the club's final 'Friday Night Lights' game at home to London Scottish this Friday, who sit one from the bottom in the table.

Blues' long run without a victory at Castle Park continued for at least another season as they were out-thought, out-fought, and beaten in pretty much every facet of the game on Saturday and Woolford said: “We are probably just not consistent enough at the minute and it's really frustrating.

“Since Christmas, one week we are on it and then next game we lose – we are really struggling to back up games.

“We've come up here and at half-time it's a one score game. But in the first couple of minutes of the second half we have just capitulated. We've had to take our medicine today. It's just not good enough.

“We couldn't turn our pressure into points and they were very clinical.

“But we haven't become a bad team overnight. We are probably just not doing enough of the stuff we are good at.

“It's a quick turnaround now and Friday is a good chance to do a double over them. Hopefully we can right a few wrongs.”

Blues are in danger of seeing their season fall apart after three defeats in five to start 2026 have really decimated their campaign, thought they somehow remain third in the Champ Rugby table.

They trailed only 12-5 at half-time at Doncaster before being blown away

On a positive note, Ben Griffin scored his first try for the club – a consolation late on - and Tui Uru increased his personal tally in the first-half, Nicholas Finch adding a conversion.

It is a competitive league, and results are changing every week, so Blues have to find some consistency for the final nine games.

As well as the rugby, this Friday sees Blues' annual Ale Festival in the CMC Marquee with have live music throughout the evening and it is also Community Clubs Night as the Bedford players wear the socks of different local rugby clubs.
