Moncur the late hero as Bedford Town complete a six-point Easter

Bedford Town claimed their second double of the season, after beating King’s Lynn Town 1-0 at the Walks, as George Moncur stepped up to score a very late penalty on Monday.

The win also gave Bedford a welcome six-point haul over the Easter period, in their bid to retain National League status for next season.

Lee Bircham made just one change to the side that beat Leamington on Good Friday, with Ryan Doherty coming in for Josh Tomlinson.

The stage was set from the first minute, with both sides playing cagily, fearful that one mistake could prove disastrous.

After some sparring, a free kick to the home side resulted in the first shot of the game, as Brandon Forbes put the ball through a crowd of players, only for Nathan Ashmore to comfortably collect.

It wasn’t until midway through the half, that another effort came, and Forbes tried again, coming in from the left only to fire over the bar.

A Bedford counter allowed Moncur to split the sparse defence to give Junior Gyamfi a chance, and although he did get a shot away, it wasn’t quickly enough, and the defence reorganised to block.

It took 30 minutes for the first corner, and this went the way of the Linnets, and when it came over, Ross Crane headed too high.

From this, King’s Lynn had a little purple patch with a couple of more corners and Ashmore saving from a free kick.

Sam Brown provided some good, long throws during the game, although nobody could take advantage of his earlier ones, despite a defending header dropping in front of Josh Castiglione, who proceeded to fire over the bar.

The second half came, and nobody was taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

Just before the hour mark, Gyamfi came as close as anyone, as he latched onto a defending header to curl his shot in, only to see it rebound off the woodwork, and put off for a corner, that the home side countered from, and this ended when Crane’s shot grazed the outside of Ashmore’s post.

Brown’s long throws were starting to cause problems as the game dragged on, and one found Moncur in the area, but his effort was blocked just before an almighty scramble resulted in a Bedford corner.

As the game was nearing the end, with goalless draw written all over it, another Brown throw into a crowded area saw a home hand rise up to deflect the ball away, and the referee had no choice but to award Bedford a penalty.

No one was fully certain who the culprit was, but the finger of suspicion pointed to Ayodeji Sotona, who had been on the pitch for just a couple of minutes.

Moncur stepped up and sidefooted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give Bedford the lead.

There were just three minutes of normal time remaining, before an additional seven minutes added time were indicated.

In the third of those minutes, with the home side committing a large amount of players for a corner, a defending header saw Greg Sandiford push the ball forward to the overlapping Zanda Siziba, down the right.

Aaron Chapman was out of his goal, and had to race back, but Siziba snatched his shot from distance, and the ball went wide.

The Eagles held firm until the full time whistle to move up to 18th in the division.

The side now have a six-pointer on Saturday when Hereford visit the Eyrie.

This game is all ticket which have to be purchased in advance, with no sales on the turnstiles.
