Town look to retain just one loan defender

Only one of on-loan duo Joe Davis (Port Vale) and Alfie Mawson (Brentford) look likely to stay with the Hatters after their loan deals expired this week, writes Mark Wood.

Fit-again defender Anthony Charles played the full game alongside Mawson as Town claimed an encouraging 4-1 development match win at Reading on Monday.

Davis has been a regular in Town’s line-up, but boss John Still asserted there will only be room for one.

He said: “I think we will certainly trying to do something. I think we still need to do something defensively so we’ll probably decide this afternoon what way to go and try and keep one of those boys here.

“I think with Anthony Charles coming through today I don’t think we should necessarily push for the two of them so I think we’ll stay with one.”

Still is also keeping a close eye on West Ham United starlet Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu after the Hammers signed experienced centre-half Roger Johnson on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the season.

The Town boss said: “Pelly’s not fit, still injured, but that’s obviously something that we’re going to try and keep close to and see how that works out.”

There could be more loans in and out of Kenilworth Road though, as Still said: “It’s a messy week this week with loans. I think it would be best answered by the end of the week.

“But it’s certainly possible both ways, let’s have a look and see how it pans out over the next few days.

“Jim Stevenson will probably carry on with his loan. That’s still being discussed at the moment, but maybe we’ll know by the end of the week.”

And Still wouldn’t rule out a new signing either, adding: “I just want to get a few days out of the way, a little shake out, and see where we are. There’s obviously things we have out eyes on, but we will wait and see.”
