Henry: Lacey’s stunning block could prove crucial

Town skipper Ronnie Henry believes that if Luton go on to win the Skrill Premier title this season, they could well be in the debt of young defender Alex Lacey, writes Mike Simmonds.

With full time approaching at Braintree on Tuesday night, the hosts pumped the ball into the box one last time and with Sean Marks a nailed on certainty to equalise and make the score 2-2, Lacey came out of nowhere to clear the ball the safety.

Before the Iron could take the following corner, the whistle was blown, adding extra significance to the centre-half’s timely intervention.

Henry said: “We can look back at that if we win the league, that may be the couple of points that get us to that.

“Fair play to Lacey, he’s been on it. He’s had a bit of criticism the last few weeks for goals we’ve conceded, but what a great tackle.”

Boss John Still was also mightily impressed with the efforts of Lacey, especially playing alongside a new central defensive partner in Andy Parry for final 30 minutes.

He said: “It was the first time that Parry and Lacey had played in there together and you never know if a combination is going to work.

“It’s not even the quality of the players, sometimes it’s the combination of the players.

“They did fantastic though and with the last kick of the game, Lacey made a fantastic challenge in the six yard box.”

Parry, who had a bird’s eye view of the incident, added: “It was a good hard working performance by all the boys.

“We had to dig in deep and Lacey made a cracking tackle at the end to keep us in it.”
