Hatters fall to Charlton defeat

New Luton signing Scott Griffiths played 90 minutes as a strong Town development side went down 2-0 against Championship Charlton Athletic on Wednesday afternoon.

Dean Brill, Wayne Thomas, JJ O’Donnell, Dan Walker and Arnaud Mendy were all handed starts for Luton, as was Greg Taylor in the friendly game at the Addicks’ training ground.

Charlton were 1-0 in front at half time thanks to a Kevin Feely header, and secured victory with a late second-half penalty from Joe Pigott.

First team coach Alan Neilson told the club’s official website: “It was a good work-out but a frustrating result. We more than matched Charlton for the first half but conceded a sloppy goal from a corner which was very disappointing.

“We played at the right tempo throughout and looked dangerous on a number of occasions going forward, but Charlton got stronger inside the final 15 minutes and scored a second from the penalty spot.

“Charlton are doing well in their reserve league and beat us 4-0 earlier in the season, but in truth 2-0 wasn’t a fair reflection of the game. I thought we deserved to score at least one goal.

“On the whole I couldn’t fault the players and with a number of them playing 90 minutes, there were a lot of positives to take from the game.”

Town: Dean Brill, Greg Taylor, Wayne Thomas, Alex Lacey, Scott Griffiths, JJ O’Donnell (Adam Watkins), Arnaud Mendy, Matt Robinson (Charlie Smith), Trialist (Trialist), Jake Woolley, Dan Walker.
