Gray sets his sights on golden boot

Gray bagged his 29th and 30th goals of the season during the 4-1 win over Forest Green Rovers on Monday, to move one ahead of Halifax striker Lee Gregory.

He was then taken off immediately after his second goal, but is expected to lead the line against long-time relegated Hyde, while Gregory’s Shaymen host Kidderminster.

Town boss John Still said: “His hamstring was a tight and he’s missed a little bit (of training), so he’ll want to play on Saturday.

“It was the right thing to do. If he stays on and that becomes a problem, he’s not going to play in the last game and that won’t give him the best chance to score.

“So we’ll give him the best chance to get as many goals as he can.”

Gray himself was delighted to reach the landmark of 30 goals despite not being at full fitness.

He continued: “It was nice for me, I’m not fully, fully fit and don’t think I can sprint as fast as I can.

“I know that I don’t have to in the team I’m playing with and know that I’m going to get chances.”

The striker’s first goal came from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box and despite missing his previous effort, against Rovers last season, regular taker Jake Howells stepped aside.

Gray continued: “Last time I was a bit in two minds as I’d never taken one before, but this season is completely different for me.

“Credit to Howellsy and the gaffer, they let me take the penalty and let me hit that landmark.”

Still confirmed that now the title was secure, he was happy to go chasing records, and Gray being top scorer wasn’t the only one.

He said: “Because we’ve won the league, it was an opportunity for him to get to a personal milestone of 30 goals .

“Hopefully he can go on and get to be leading scorer too.

“I wasn’t worried about records before we won the league, but now we’ve won the league, we’ve got 100 goals now too.

“We can get 100 points and need one more for a record of clean sheets.

“Also, if we win and Cambridge don’t, I think that’s the record number of points to win the league by, so there’s some more special moments maybe and how great would that be?”

Defender Steve McNulty may miss the trip to Hyde though as he went off early on Monday.

Still added: “Steve’s knee has been a problem for a little while, so there was no need to push him over the barriers now Alex Lacey is back.”
