Goodman delighted to net against former side

The 20-year-old played 11 times for Town at the end of last season on loan from Millwall, before Aldershot Town borrowed him from the Championship side in the summer.

Despite promising he wouldn’t do beforehand, Goodman couldn’t resist when he reacted quickest to turn the ball home from close range after some poor defending from Town.

The centre-half said: “It was good to score a goal, I’ve had loads of chances to score and have been pretty poor in front of goal.

“I said to my dad before the game if I score I wouldn’t celebrate, but I just couldn’t help it.”

Shots hit back to lead 3-2 at half time after trailing 2-1, before Shaun Whalley rescued a point for Town from the penalty spot, although Goodman felt his side deserved to hold on.

He continued: “If you look at it on paper, it’s a really good result for us, but if you’re down here watching it, you’d be disappointed to not get the three.

“Yet again we’ve started off sloppy and conceded. We’ve got to be starting better like we have been, but it was a good comeback from the lads as we know we could do it.”

Shots boss Andy Scott thought it was a fine performance from his side, especially after suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to Grimsby Town on Saturday.

He added: “It was a fantastic effort, especially after going 1-0 down so early in the game as we did on Saturday.

“The response was magnificent, we had a side put together that had never played before, this group of players who had never played as a back four, they didn’t even train together, because three or four of them were injured.

“They’ve wrapped themselves up, strapped themselves up and produced a performance that I’m absolutely delighted with.

“We created a lot of chances, were dynamic going forward, used the ball well looked solid defensively. That might sound mad as we’ve conceded three goals, but they’re a powerful side.

“They’re strong and have got options, lots of experience and lot of pace.

“Once we dealt with it and became stronger, we were in the ascendancy.

“We’ve had the best chances, they’ve equalised from a penalty, that’s the way it is.”
