Fleetwood heads Hatters exit list while Mendy told he can leave too

Hatters boss John Still exclusively announced he won’t be offering new deals to six of his Town squad, including Stuart Fleetwood, Janos Kovacs and Greg Taylor, writes Mike Simmonds.

Speaking to the press this afternoon, Still revealed which players would not be offered new deals in the summer and can start looking for alternative employment.

He said: “Alasan Ann, Scott Neilson, James Dance, Stuart Fleetwood, Jan Kovacs, obviously Greg (Taylor) has gone on loan (to Mansfield), so they are all of the ones that I’ve told.”

Still also confirmed that French midfielder Arnaud Mendy is now up for sale too as he continued: “I have told Arnaud Mendy.today, that I’m going to put him on the transfer list which may or not have anything to do with football.

“But, that’s really internal and something that’s disappointed me, so I’ve made him available.”

On why he decided to release the players, Still said: “It’s like the two members of staff that went, some of these lads are really nice, decent honest people, hard working people, but I have to find a way of getting this club promotion, I have to.

“I probably won’t find it with 11 or 20 people that I like, that are my mates, that I’m going to go out socially with, it doesn’t happen like that.

“All the players have to do when they’re not playing, not training, is be the people they are. But when they come in the door they’ve got to be hard working dedicated, up to the job players that can provide a winning team for this football club.

“Some of the lads that have gone, they actually have all of those attributes, but maybe not in the quantity that I perhaps need.

“It doesn’t make them not good people, some of them are really, really good people, but this is the game we’re in. It’s about winning and the most important thing is to try and get a winning mentality and get a winning team.”

The likes of Adam Watkins, Mark Tyler, Lewis Kidd, Dan Walker, Wayne Thomas and Steve McNulty are all out of contract in the summer too and Still added: “I need to make changes and there will be one or two more but that’s probably for the early part of next week.”

On hearing the news, Fleetwood tweeted: “Absolutely loved my time at Luton, proper club and proper fans! Had a good relationship with everyone and am gutted I couldn’t do what I came to do and win promotion. It’s a new era and the club is in transition, so prepare yourselves. I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone at the club, top people and professional to the end. A very happy time that I will look back on fondly.”

Meanwhile, Taylor tweeted: “Thanks for the messages. Don’t really want to go into what’s gone on during the season, but things changed a lot since I first arrived. I’m just glad to have an opportunity to play football and start enjoying it again with a new challenge. Thanks for the messages!”
