The 21-year-old started life at Millwall and also had spells with QPR and Yeovil, but failed to make the first team at any of the three clubs and dropped down to Blue Square Bet North side Histon.

Luton boss John Still moved to bring the defender in alongside Stutes team-mate James Stevenson last month though as Fitzsimons said: “I was a first year pro at Millwall, QPR and Yeovil and played some reserve team games.

“At QPR, Neil Warnock was in charge, but I was never really near the first team, although I was training with the reserves which was quite good.

“I ended up going to Yeovil, but then had to take a step back to get two steps forward and went to Histon for two seasons where I played 100 games.”

Although Luton’s interest was a shock to Fitzsimons, once the enquiry was made, there was never any doubt over the move, while the fact that it was Still who is now in charge at Kenilworth Road was also a big plus for the defender.
