Alan Dee’s guide to the pick of the week’s TV

SATURDAY

The Voice UK (BBC One, 7.20pm)

Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue have each coached their acts, parted with words of wisdom and hoped for results that saw them turn from raw talents into singing superstars, but now the competition is entirely out of their hands.

Last week saw the brilliantly talented foursome join their respective semi-finalists for group performances, and while it made for cracking TV, for the contestants it was make-or-break time.

This week we won’t have to wait until Sunday to discover the result.

Sunday

The Apprentice (BBC One, 8.30pm)

There’s been a bit of grumbling in some quarters that this hasn’t been a vintage series of The Apprentice.

Maybe it’s because the format is getting a little over-familiar, or because the latest crop of contestants didn’t contain a big character. However, that should all change as we get to the dreaded interview task.

Monday

The Diamond Jubilee Concert (BBC One, 7.30pm)

Tonight sees the biggest Jubilee party of them all, featuring a host of singers and musicians from the worlds of rock, pop and classical music.

The event – a mammoth undertaking by anyone’s measure – is the brainchild of pop superstar Gary Barlow, who’s been instrumental in lining up acts which represent the best of music from the past 60 years.

Among them are Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, JLS, Elton John, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Jools Holland, Annie Lennox, Madness, Paul McCartney, Cliff Richard, Ed Sheeran, Stevie Wonder and Grace Jones, all of whom will be performing their most popular songs.

Barlow himself will be singing, too - and rumour has it that he’ll be joined on-stage in his performance by Prince Harry himself, who’ll be keeping time on the tambourine.

Tuesday

Martin Clunes: The Lemurs Of Madagascar (ITV1, 9pm)

Martin Clunes is a lucky so-and-so. Not only is he the star of several smash-hit TV series, he also gets to make documentaries about subjects close to his heart.

His latest sees him journey to Madagascar, but the trip isn’t just about getting up close and personal with some cute critters - he’s visiting the island to find out why the numbers of its lemur population are dwindling. What he learns is that it isn’t easy to point the finger of blame at a nation whose human population are struggling to survive.

Wednesday

Secret Eaters (Channel 4, 8pm)

Anna Richardson has realised that we have a big fat problem - quite literally - and she’s making it her mission to sort it out.

Up for scrutiny this week is the Maekin family, while the show also looks at how shopping habits can be changed for the better.

Thursday

The House the 50s Built (Channel 4, 9pm)

Professor Brendan Walker takes a closer look at the science behind the gadgets we now take for granted, beginning with the kitchen.

There will be contributions from people who experienced the appliance of science first-hand, including Maureen Lipman, Faye Weldon and members of the WI.

Friday

Euro 2012 Live (ITV1, 7.15pm)

The build-up to this tournament hasn’t been quite as frenzied as previous European Championships or the World Cup, but you really should know that the latest international showdown between the continent’s best national teams begins today.

Co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, it promises to be a showcase for some of the most talented players around.
