Political Opinion: Central Bedfordshire named one of the best places in the country to raise a family

Leader's Column by Cllr Adam Zerny, Central Beds Council Leader

The latest report from the Government's Children’s Commissioner contains some encouraging news for Central Bedfordshire. Among local authorities in England, our area was ranked ninth out of 152, for having one of the least challenging environments in which to grow up.

The report considers many factors that shape children’s lives, including family circumstances, health, education, care and community safety.

The findings highlight the strengths of our area, and I want to pay tribute to the many organisations, many of them voluntary, which go into making this happen. Parents and carers, schools, health services, the police, charitable organisations, community groups and, of course, Central Bedfordshire Council all play a part in creating an environment in which families can thrive.

As a council, Central Bedfordshire performs many roles, such as supporting families when they need help, and protecting children who are vulnerable.

While more work remains to be done, it is heartening to see this recognised in independent assessments such as Ofsted's recent report, which judged the council's Children and Families services to be good, recognising the commitment of staff and partners who support children and families every day. The council has also received positive feedback through a recent Corporate Parenting peer review, which looked specifically at support for children in care.

Of course, a successful area is not simply one where most children do well. It is one where the right support is available when life becomes difficult, and where every child has the opportunity to achieve their potential regardless of their circumstances.

Some children and families in Central Bedfordshire still face significant challenges, and averages can hide real differences in experience. There is always more to do, and we will not be complacent. For example, we will continue to make the government aware that funding for SEND is not nearly enough to allow local authorities to provide the support that is required.

Nevertheless, this report is useful recognition of what can be achieved when organisations, communities and families work together. It gives confidence things are moving in the right direction, while acting as a useful reminder we must do our utmost to ensure every child in Central Bedfordshire has the chance to grow up safe, and supported.
