Bedford's free half-term workshops could help parents choose better Christmas gifts

A free science or craft session during Bedford's October half-term could do more than keep children busy: it might help parents work out what they will genuinely enjoy for Christmas. Kidora, a UK parent-to-parent marketplace for baby and children's items, is encouraging families to use children's interests as a guide when considering good-quality preloved presents.

The Higgins Bedford is hosting two free, drop-in family activities next week. On Tuesday 27 October, the Good Life Garden will lead autumn-inspired crafts and sensory play. On Wednesday 28 October, Cosmic Latte will explore flight through hands-on science, engineering and creative activities. Both run from noon to 3pm; children must be accompanied by an adult.

The museum also lists bookable workshops for 29 and 30 October, including a sound experiment and painting inspired by music. Booking is required for those sessions; check availability before travelling.

Such activities can also help parents plan Christmas spending. A child who spends an afternoon fascinated by making things fly might enjoy construction toys or an age-appropriate science book. One who loves painting might prefer art materials to the latest heavily advertised gadget.

Bedford Central Library offers another opportunity to explore interests without buying first. Its regular activities include Lego Club on Saturdays and Building Block Play on term-time Tuesdays. The council says these activities are free, but check times before visiting.

When it is time to buy, the item need not be new. A complete preloved building set, a collection of children's books or an unused craft kit can be a thoughtful present if its condition and contents suit the child. Some parents also receive duplicate baby presents or gifts in the wrong size that remain unused. Such items may be listed for sale rather than left in a cupboard.

On Kidora, parents can browse children's clothes, toys, books and baby essentials listed by other UK families through native iPhone and Android apps. Listings include preloved and sometimes unused items. Some items are offered free for local collection only; availability varies. Priced items may be collected or delivered where the seller's options and destination allow, and applicable buyer charges are shown before payment.

Buyers should examine descriptions and photographs, check for missing pieces and consider age guidance and product recalls. Extra care is necessary with safety-critical baby equipment: a low price is never a substitute for a trustworthy history or safe condition.

Parents with belongings to pass on can also list them on Kidora without seller fees. Its AI-assisted feature suggests listing details from a photograph, leaving sellers to review the information and choose the price. Founded by North Wales mum-of-two Karolina Gudes, the platform is independent of The Higgins and Bedford Borough Libraries.

The practical lesson for Christmas is to notice what children enjoy before purchasing, then choose gifts that fit their interests and the family budget, whether new or preloved.
