Kovacs targets monster winning run for Hatters

ATTERS centre-half Janos Kovacs has set his side the target of a monster winning run to give them every chance of pipping Wrexham and Fleetwood to the title this season, writes Mike Simmonds.

Despite back-to-back 5-0 wins over Kettering during the festive period, Town still find themselves 11 points off top spot.

Kovacs said: “If we can get on a 10-15 game unbeaten run and 90 per cent of them are wins, that would be ideal.

“That would be the push that we need to get back into the situation where we can challenge Wrexham and Fleetwood because in points we are too far away from them.

“If we can get on a good winning run, in unbeaten runs you can drop two points in games, wins are wins.”

Neither of the top two have gone through any real indifferent patches of form yet, and Kovacs hopes if and when that does happen, they are ready to pounce.

He continued: “I’m pretty sure they will have their bad run as well.

“Hopefully we will not have too many bad runs as we have already had the bad things earlier in the season.

“We have had three good games and even though I don’t want to be negative, at any minute you can have a bad performance.

“We need to show as a group, as a team and get on with everything, because we are on a good run.

“If we control the situations, ban the negatives then hopefully at the end of the season, worse case scenario we will finish in the play-offs and hopefully third time lucky.”

With the transfer window open, Brabin has quickly turned the loan deals of Kovacs and Greg Taylor into permanent moves.

The Hungarian defender believes his side will be looking for more signings, but insisted the squad in place is already well equipped.

He said: “From the first day when I walked into the club again in September, I said that the squad’s ability and strength is absolutely amazing for this level.

“The players that we’ve got, and not just the quality, but the size of squad as well.

“I’m pretty sure they are looking for strengthening every minute, every day and that is good, because that is useful for the football club.

“I don’t know what kind of strengthening will happen in the transfer window. Greg Taylor signed and myself already signed permanent deals.

“The football club is everything, so hopefully the most important thing is not the transfer window, but promotion.”

Town now have a great chance to make further strides with two home games against Newport County on Saturday and Stockport County on Tuesday night.

Kovacs added: “There are no easy games and you cannot play easy games in this league, not just this league but in this football.

“Let’s take the first one first, Newport, let’s win that one and from that until the end of the season, we are always taking one game as it comes.

“The next two games, home games, six points is what we need and hopefully it will happen, we will all do our best.”
