Henry set for op as Still searches for a right-back

Filling the right-back berth is one of the biggest question marks for Town chief John Still ahead of the Friday night’s visit of Grimsby Town, writes Mark Wood.

With Ronnie Henry having a hernia operation today (Thursday), Still said: “We now have to look at the side we can put out really on Friday because we haven’t got Ronnie Henry so we’ll have to look at that right-back position.

“We need to find someone who can come in and do that job. We’ll have a look in training.”

Town have been left slightly short in numbers after telling several players they don’t have a future at the club, but Still is happy with the situation.

He said: “We’ve got go with what we’ve got. Even Saturday, I’m comfortable with what we’ve had here from when we released players that it was enough to take us through to the end of the season,

“They were the players if I’m honest that I wanted to look at and assess and that’s exactly the situation that it is.”

No more signings are likely before the end of the season and Still doesn’t anticipate many changes from game to game, but has previously admitted he could give some of Luton’s younger players a chance before the end of the season.

He said: “Not many (changes). I’m pretty reasonably clear now on what we have. I’m very clear on what we need and we need to try and marry those two together.”

But the challenge is still there for some of Town’s players to prove their worth before the end of the season, with more of Still’s decisions to be announced soon.

He said: “That’s still up in the air for a few days.

“If you go into a situation and you’ve got 20 bars of chocolate, and you don’t eat chocolate, you’re going to get rid of them and get what you do eat.

“And footballers ain’t no different. I’ve got all these footballers, they’ve got to be for me, and if I had to tell 20 that they’re not, I’ll tell 20 because I can’t make them into something that they’re not.

“They’ve really got to show me that they’re what we need to try and get promotion out of this league.”

Winger David Martin was Town’s two-goal hero in the 3-0 win over Lincoln City of Tuesday night and believes Luton’s fans are starting to see him get back to his best.

He said: “When I first came here it showed I was a bit rusty, I wasn’t quite there, my fitness wasn’t there my touch and everything else.

“As a player you need games to get your confidence back, your fitness back and I think I’m starting to show that now. I don’t think I’m quite 100 per cent there yet though, but I’m definitely getting back to how I was and hopefully I can just finish the season strong and hopefully kick off next season firing.”

Martin is enjoying playing under Still and believes he and his team-mates are focused on showing him what they can do in the last four games of the season.

He continued: “I’m really enjoying it, it’s good to be playing, he gives you good guidance, you know where you stand with him and you know what he wants from you.

“As long as you go out there and give 100 per cent that’s all you can ask. At the end of the day you can have a bad game at some point, but no-one can stop you from working hard.

“That’s the mentality he’s drilled into the players and I think it’s shown.

“Everyone’s focused. You are playing for yourselves as well as you’re playing for the club. You’ve got to go out there, you’ve got to give 100 per cent, show the gaffer what you can do and hopefully we can all do that between now and the end of the season and hopefully give the gaffer a headache to hopefully keep us.

“Hopefully I’ve done enough, there’s still four games to go yet and I want to keep playing, keep doing well and for myself personally I want to finish the season strong.”

Still isn’t too worried about who the opposition are in the remaining games as he continues to try and learn more about his side.

“I’m not really worried too much about Newport or Grimsby, I just have to worry about us,” he said.

Midfielder Alex Lawless though would like to put one over on the Mariners, who have been something of a bogey side for the Hatters this season.

They were well beaten 4-1 in the league at Blundell Park in September and knocked out of the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy 3-0 there.

He said: “Like I say we’ve got Grimsby now who I think we owe them one for a few defeats this season.”

Lawless is also keen for Town to finish as high up the league as possible, adding: “I can only speak for myself really and I don’t want to finish low down I don’t want it to be the lowest-ever finish.

“Just try and get it as high as we can and there’s a lot of pride left in this side and there’s a few teams that we’ve got to play that are above us and I think it would be nice to get one over them as well.

“There’s stuff to play for definitely and there’s futures on the line and you want to stay in the manger’s thoughts for next season and stuff so there’s a lot to play for.”
