Cup no bad thing says Neilson

Hatters: Assistant boss Alan Neilson doesn’t believe a run in the FA Cup would be detrimental to Town’s Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.

Luton face Nuneaton Town at home in the first round on Saturday and Neilson was quick to point to Crawley Town’s efforts in the 2010-11 season as they won the title while also reaching the fifth round and enjoyed a trip to Manchester United.

He said: “We want to go as far as we can in the FA Cup to keep the momentum going and with the squad we’ve got we can do that. At the end of the day it’s that big P. Promotion, that’s what the club is geared for. People say the cup can take the edge off the league, but look at Crawley.

“They had a great cup run, went to Man United and they won the league.”

On the test Boro will offer, Neilson added: “In the cup you always want a home draw against opposition in our league. The cup game will be totally different to the league game. A lot of teams sit back against us, but in the cup we expect them to come and try to win the game.”
