The 34-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan deal from League One Swindon in August, weighed in with 19 goals in all competitions.

Benson, who is expected to sign permanently for Hatters once his Robins contract has officially expired, said: I’m happy with my contribution, I think I’ve done what I expected to. “

“I would have liked to have got 20 goals, that’s my target if I’m honest, that’s what I set myself.

“Had I not missed the last few games I think I might have made it, but I’m happy.

“I don’t think I’ve over-achieved and don’t think I’ve under-achieved, I’ve hit the standards I thought I would.

“I’m delighted, but it’s not about individuals, it’s about the team and the main aim when I come here was to get the club promoted and that was achieved.”
