Happy New Year: Lane closures at Bedford's Paula Radcliffe Way to last 30 days

Here’s one to mark in your diaries, people.

From Monday, January 5, 2026, there’ll be maintenance work on Paula Radcliffe Way which will last 30 DAYS.

Lane closures will be in place 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK for the duration of the works, and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow all traffic management and diversion signs.

The works will take place on Paula Radcliffe Way from the Sainsbury’s roundabout to the Thatched Barn on Bedford Road.

Workers will be replacing sumpless gullies, clearing kerb channels and vegetation. Warning signs will be in place prior its start so you can brace yourself for the misery.

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times throughout the works.

A major highway scheme was completed on Paula Radcliffe Way in 2023, and these new works form part of the council’s ongoing programme of maintenance and improvement to keep key routes safe and resilient.

Councillor Nicola Gribble, portfolio holder for environment at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Keeping our key routes in good condition is vital for safety and for keeping Bedford borough moving. These drainage and maintenance works on Paula Radcliffe Way will help manage surface water, protect the road structure, and support safer journeys for all road users. We know roadworks can be frustrating and are very grateful for drivers’ patience and cooperation while this important programme is carried out.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, consider alternative routes where possible, and keep an eye on the Council’s social media channels for any further updates.
