Nuneaton confirm pitch inspection ahead of Town visit

Luton Town’s trip to Nuneaton Town tomorrow is subject to a pitch inspection this afternoon, writes Mike Simmonds.

With further heavy snowfall expected, Boro have confirmed a referee will inspect the Liberty Way pitch at 3pm today.

A statement on the Nuneaton official website said: “Clubs are advised by the Football Conference not to call games off before 24 hours ahead of the match, but barring a miracle, there is no prospect of a match being played at the Triton Showers Community Arena tomorrow.

“The police, who sit on the Stadium Advisory Group, have asked for the match to be postponed due to the dangers for supporters approaching the stadium due to underfoot and approach road conditions.

“The pitch is currently under snow that continues to fall with a forecast to continue until tomorrow evening.”

Speaking to the press this morning, Town boss Paul Buckle said: “Nuneaton have spoken to us and said they’ve got to wait for it to snow before they can officially call it off.

“It’s just a matter of waiting. The good thing for us is a lot of our players played in a behind closed doors at Reading, so they’re up and running.

“It’s just a case of ticking over. We can’t get on the pitch and get the balls out, but maybe a few sprints and wait to see whether it’s off, but prepare for it to be on.”

If and when the game is called off, Buckle was unsure whether his players would be in for training over the weekend.

He added: “It depends on what it’s like. I’ve got to think about players travelling. The last thing I want to do is put them at risk, so we’ll look this afternoon and see what we think we’ll do.”
