Walk like a Buddhist monk in Bedford Park or ramble along the riverside in festival of autumn walks

Bedfordshire Ramblers have announced details of this year’s autumn festival of walks, with more than 50 taking place across the county over the course of nine days.

Running from September 6 to 13, the programme features walks for all abilities with the opportunity to explore the more than 1,500 miles of rights of way across Bedfordshire.

Some of the walks require pre-booking, and the majority are free to attend, with some featuring pub stops.

The full programme is available here, including contact details for leaders, but here are a few examples of walks in and around Bedford that you can take part in.

On Sunday, September 6 there is a three-mile walk entitled A Walk of 176 Years, described as a leisurely walk around Bedford’s Victorian cemetery.

It starts outside the chapel building at Foster Hill Road Cemetery at 2pm and is a chance to learn about Bedfordians buried at the site since 1855.

On Wednesday, September 9 there is a longer seven-mile Bedford Riverside Ramble walk, covering a mix of parkland, riverside paths and open green spaces.

It starts at 10am at the Priory Park Visitor Centre off Barkers Lane.

Finally, on Friday, September 11 you can Walk Like a Buddhist Monk on a slow and meditative silent walk around the wide green spaces of Bedford Park.

This three-mile walk starts at The Pavilion Café on Park Avenue in Bedford at 12.30pm and is expected to take around 45 minutes.

It is described as a mindful activity for adults who would like to try meditating while moving their legs and feet. It is advised to book a space through this Eventbrite link.

The programme is organised by the Bedfordshire Ramblers, who write: “In conjunction with other walking and special interest groups, we aim to bring you a varied programme of walks throughout the nine days of this festival.

“Bedfordshire Ramblers would like to extend thanks to all those involved in contributing to this festival programme, both organisations and walk leaders.”
