Revealed: The number of acid attacks going unpunished in Bedfordshire
Sickening acid attackers who disfigure innocent victims have gone undetected in nearly a third of all recent incidents in the county, shocking new data has revealed.
A harrowing investigation – through a series of Freedom of Information requests by Legal Expert – shows Bedfordshire Police recorded 19 acid attacks over the last three years.
Disturbingly, the data shows a sharp escalation, with the number of violent incidents nearly doubling in the last year alone – jumping from five in 2024 to nine in 2025.
A detailed breakdown of the force's data lays bare the horrifying reality of the crimes, as records detail terrifying offences, including two cases of causing explosions, sending explosive substances or throwing corrosive fluids with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and seven reports in 2025 alone of administering poison with intent to injure or annoy.

Even more chillingly, one incident in 2024 involving corrosive substances was linked to an offence where a person was forced to perform compulsory labour, while another was tied to a case of non-fatal strangulation.
Despite the sheer severity of these crimes, justice remains elusive. In nearly a third of Bedfordshire’s cases – six out of 19 – investigations concluded with no suspect ever being identified.
Even when perpetrators were found, accountability was shockingly rare – across the entire three-year period, just four cases resulted in a suspect being charged or summonsed to court. Furthermore, eight investigations collapsed entirely because victims withdrew their support for police action.
The statistics paint a devastating picture of the dangers and lack of resolution, with dozens of unsolved cases guaranteeing that a number of violent assailants are still walking the streets.
When approached regarding the alarming figures, Bedfordshire Police declined to comment.
“These figures highlight a deeply concerning lack of accountability for what is a barbaric and life-altering crime,” said Ellie Lamey, a Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) specialist at Legal Expert which expert support and advice.
“When perpetrators of such horrific attacks go unidentified, victims are robbed of the justice and closure they so rightfully deserve.
“Corrosive substance attacks leave victims with devastating physical and psychological scars that can take a lifetime to heal. It is absolutely vital that survivors understand they are not alone and that they can still seek specialist support and financial compensation to help rebuild their lives, even if their attacker has completely evaded the courts.”
