Bishop’s tribute to the Archbishop of Canterbury

The Rt Revd Dr Alan Smith, who is Bishop of the Diocese of St Albans which includes Bedfordshire, made his comments after the archbishop announced he was to step down.

Dr Rowan Williams became Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002, and will continue in the role until December.

The Bishop of St Albans said: “Rowan William’s unique blend of humility and prayerfulness allied to his formidable intellect has served the Church of England and the Anglican Communion well during his time in office.

“I believe that history will judge him as one of the great Archbishops of Canterbury.”
