Free personal care items at Bedford maternity ward thanks to Little Nest

Essential items for families and newborns will now be available at Bedford Hospital's maternity unit.

Little Nest is a new initiative designed to support mums-to-be, babies, and their families who may arrive unexpectedly, need to stay longer, or are experiencing financial hardship.

Items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, hair brushes and other personal care essentials – along with practical items for the newborn.

Midwife Fraya Wallington, who led the project, said: "The arrival of a baby doesn't always go according to plan.

"Unexpected admissions or longer hospital stays can leave families without essential items at a time when their focus should be on their new baby.

"Little Nest has been created to provide practical support and comfort, ensuring no one has to worry about the basics during their stay."

The donation cupboard can be found on Orchard Ward and was set up by Fraya with support from fellow staff members and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity.

There are a range of essential everyday items to support families through what can be an "unexpected and stressful time" – and it is hoped that the service can be expanded to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.

Charmaine Norrish, fundraising manager, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the development of ‘Little Nest’ and who helped make this possible. It has been fantastic to see this come into fruition.”

Ilene Machiva, director of midwifery and deputy chief nurse, said: “Well done Fraya for spearheading this project and being committed to providing such compassionate care for the community we serve.”
