Swimmer Gracie raises funds for charity helping those with painful condition
“Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, yet it is still widely misunderstood and can take years to diagnose”
An optical assistant swam 9km in a fundraising challenge to support people living with endometriosis.

Gracie Ridout, from Specsavers Bedford home visits, completed the challenge on 31 May, aiming to cover the full 9km distance over several hours at her local swimming pool.
So far, she has raised more than £400 through her GoFundMe page, with a target of £500.
The fundraiser is supporting Endometriosis UK, the UK’s leading charity for all those affected by the condition, with the aim of ensuring that everyone gets prompt diagnosis and the best treatment and support.
Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, often causing severe pain, fatigue and fertility problems.
The charity has a personal importance for Grace because her sister and best friend live with the condition.
Gracie says: “Seeing first-hand the impact it has on their daily lives, from chronic pain to the emotional toll, has made me want to do something to support them and others going through the same thing.
“Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, yet it is still widely misunderstood and can take years to diagnose.
“By raising money, I hope to help fund vital support services, raise awareness, and contribute towards better understanding of the condition.
“Swimming 9km is a challenge, but it’s nothing compared to what those living with endometriosis face every day.”
Gracie has had support from her friends, family and her team at Specsavers home visits Bedford, which provides free at-home eye and hearing tests in the Bedford area for people who are unable to leave their homes unaccompanied due to physical or mental disabilities. The mobile team provides full examinations, dispenses glasses, and offers aftercare.
Chris Furlonger, Bedford Specsavers Domiciliary director, says: ‘We are proud and excited that Gracie is doing something that will contribute to making a difference to so many people’s lives. We fully support what Gracie is doing.
‘Many members of the team have contributed towards Gracie's target, lets hope she supersedes that target.’
