An evening in the company of Austen characters at Bedford theatre

Austen died in 1817 – but her her novels are more popular and more widely read than ever.

And as well as her young heroines, Austen created a wealth of older characters that she brought to life with her usual observation and wit – the languid Lady Bertram, the hypochondriac Mr Woodhouse and the long-suffering Mr Bennet together with his wife.

There is also the talkative Miss Bates, and the epitome of snobbishness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Theatre company Certain Age presents An Evening with Jane Austen at The Place from Thursday March 16 to Saturday March 18.

The show has been specially devised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death and to celebrate her life and works.

It consists of dramatised scenes, monologues and narration drawn directly from her six main novels as well as offering small insights into her life.
