Console Corner: Goat Simulator makes it to PS4

You may have heard the name around and like me wondered ‘what’s that all about?’ but like me never been curious enough to find out... well Goat Simulator has got so big it is being released on the world’s best selling console.

You may have heard the name around and like me wondered ‘what’s that all about?’ but like me never been curious enough to find out... well Goat Simulator has got so big it is being released on the world’s best selling console.

The game is already out for PC, iOS, Android, Mac and the Xboxes One and 360 and is coming to PS3 and PS4 on August 11.

So just what is Goat Simulator and why have Sony decided we need it on the most powerful console around?

For those who have missed out on this cultural milestone, the best way I can describe it is that it reminds me of a really random and bizarre take on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games but you play as a goat, everything is absurd and nothing makes any sense.

I had an idea for a smartphone game app a few years ago called ‘Bogey Olympics’.

In the game you would direct the on screen finger up the on screen nose and root out different types and textures of the pleasant green stuff that dwells inside.

Essentially you would then (using the touchscreen) roll it in whatever way you felt appropriate to take on the various events like javelin, discus, shooting at a football goal etc.

I didn’t have the expertise, knowledge or inclination to go through with it. And as terrible an idea as it sounds, games like Goat Simulator make me regret it every day.

The idea is that you control your goat and try to do as much damage as possible around an open-world map, without any other actual goals.

The game, initially developed as a joke prototype from an internal game jam and shown in an early alpha state in YouTube videos, was met with excitement and attention, prompting developer Coffee Stain Studios to build it into a releasable state while still retaining various non-breaking bugs and glitches to maintain the game’s entertainment value.

Intriguing and baffling in equal measure.
