Bedford Blues hero Ben Ransom praised his team-mates’ resilience as they looked to be on course for defeat against Nottingham on Saturday, before he scored a try deep into injury time to claim a famous victory, writes Michael Hann.

“I thought the boys stuck together magnificently at the end,” said a delighted Ransom after the game. “The first half was very tough. We were coming up the hill and we had only scored three points.”

In fact Bedford trailed by 19 points at half time and Ransom says that gave them plenty to think about at the break.

“We just needed to front up, we weren’t making our tackles in the first half and we just needed to slow the ball down,” he said.

“We knew when we had the ball that we would be able to score tries.”

The Blues fought back at the start of the second half, scoring two quick tries, and Ransom believes that gave them a psychological edge over their opponents.

“After we scored a couple of tries we saw that their heads had dropped, and with the slope in our favour we knew we could score again,” he said.

“To come back and win 27-25 is a great credit to the boys team spirit. That is three wins and a draw now and the guys are playing well.”

Ransom had a glorious chance to score a try moments before he claimed the winner and he said it was just one of a number of chances they missed out on during the game.

“We had a couple of chances at the end of the first half and early in the second half that we didn’t take – which made it a lot harder,” he continued.

“But at the end there we came back and showed what we can do.”

Ransom is dual-registered from Premiership side Saracens and he thanked the Blues for giving him a chance to play first team rugby.

“I must say a thank you to Bedford for giving me the opportunity,” he added.

“Coming from Sarries and to play with a great bunch of lads week in, week out is really good fun.”
