Bedford Blues captain Michael Le Bourgeois admits his side '˜were not clinical enough' during the Blues' 16-45 loss to Bristol in the first leg of the play off semi-final.

Bedford looked to bounce back from their defeat against Bristol on the last day of the Championship campaign, but Mike Rayer’s men still have the second leg of the play off semi-final to redeem themselves.

Bristol ran in six tries against the Blues to give themselves a 29 point advantage going in to the return fixture at Ashton Gate next Sunday.

Le Bourgeois said: “It’s still only half time in the tie so we need to turn our focus on to next week’s game and learn from our mistakes today.

“Bristol are a strong, experienced side and that certainly proved in some of the set pieces today.

“We had loads of opportunities throughout the game but we weren’t clinical enough going forward.”

The Jersey man has enjoyed many of games this season as captain and he looks the perfect replacement for Nick Fenton-Wells who has been ruled out of action for both legs of the play-off semi-finals.

Le Bourgeois has cemented his place in Bedford’s first 15 week in week out and it’s clear to see why, as he captained the squad from inside centre in possibly one of Bedford’s toughest games this season.

Le Bourgeois added “Credit to Bristol for finishing off their chances, which proved to be the difference in the end.

“We’re always improving as a team and we will be focusing on improving our set pieces during training this week.

“We will analyse what went on and we will come back fighting at Ashton Gate next Sunday.”
