Muscle power helps dig up Chiltern Road, Dunstable

THE old photo, above, of Chiltern Road, Dunstable, in Yesteryear two weeks ago has prompted this further view, left, of the street, when it was clearly in the process of immense change.

No mechanical help then…just shovels, pickaxes and muscle.

Judging from the size of the rocks, the men were not merely resurfacing the road or filling-in potholes.

So perhaps this was the time when the road was extended from Union Street to West Street.

That part of the road, previously an unmade track, had been known as Cemetery Road.

The photo, undated, is from the Pat Lovering collection. It was given to her over 30 years ago by Bill Smith, of Southwood Road.
