Bedford’s strong rowing heritage will be on display at the Henley Royal Regatta this month.
With the Olympic Games only weeks away, Henley will be even more strongly contested than ever.
Qualifying for the prestigious event begins on Friday with the preliminary races when more than 400 crews will line up for timed races in a bid to qualify for just 97 places.
They will be joined on the following Wednesday, the first day, by those already selected.
A record entry of 629 crews, 165 from abroad – from Europa, the USA and China among others – will compete over the five days of the famous Regatta.
All local clubs will be represented.
Bedford Rowing Club and St Neots Rowing Club will both compete in the Thames Cup Eights while Star Club have entered the Fawley Cup for Quads.
Bedford School and Bedford Modern School both go in the Princess Elizabeth Cup for School Eights with Bedford School also in the Temple Challenge Cup for Fours.
Of all these entries only Bedford School do not have to qualify but go straight into the first round proper.
