GNG Bedford has taken the Eastern Region Volleyball Series down to the wire as they are now only one point behind league leaders Medusa after a thrilling tournament in Norwich.
With Medusa already having two wins and two second places from the first four tournaments, and with the best four results counting, they had 38 points in the bag.
GNG Bedford, meanwhile, went into the Norwich tournament with one win and one second place - meaning only wins in the last two events would be enough to snatch the title.
After an exciting day’s play, not only did GNG Bedford win the tournament, but they won in style - hammering Medusa 53-33 in the final in their most impressive display of the season so far.
With 10 men’s teams taking part in the tournament, the format changed to two pools of five teams; the winner of each pool going straight into the final.
First up for the GNG Bedford was Ipswich Spikers, who provided stiff opposition before Bedford eventually triumphed after half-time.
The next two games were against weaker opposition; Bury Bobcats and Rhinos, GNG Bedford were able to rotate their squad while still recording two wins..
Next came the match of the day, against BAKS - playing in the Lithuanian national colours - who had up to then breezed through their first three games.
Both teams delivered superb volleyball, however GNG Bedford’s outside attackers, Krasimir Kovachev and Wojciech Pomorski produced some huge power spikes to send their team through to the final.
The highly anticipated showdown against Medusa turned out to be somewhat of an anti-climax, as the power attack from GNG Bedford was unstoppable in a 20-point 53-33 victory.
Unlike the previous final where the Medusa block tamed the big hitters from GNG Bedford, this time Medusa block just could not cope with the deluge of power spikes raining down on them.
