An intrepid group of Flitwick Dolphins travelled to Whitlingham Lake in Norwich for the annual East Region Open Water Championships and concurrent Bedfordshire County Championships.
The day started with the 3km race, and the first regional gold medal of the day was won by Rhianydd Jones in the 20-24 year category.
Three other swimmers, Ella Marlow-Gilks (16), Emma Boost (13) and Katie Tompkins (14) raced each other for the whole 3km, with Ella triumphing to take a Bedfordshire county medal.
The 800m race was next and the team’s youngest member, Tyler Watson (11), stormed round the course to take a county gold medal.
That was followed by the 1500m, which saw Louise Simmons take the second regional gold medal of the day in the 20-24 year category.
Rhianydd’s brother, Owen, weighed in with a silver in the men’s 25-29 year category, and Simon Dove also won silver in the 50-59 year category.
Thomas Allen and Ben Trott came fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 17-19 year age group, while Olivia Fowler (12) put in a strong swim to come home in a large group of 12-16 year-olds.
The race saw the team’s only non-finish of the day when Isaac Moon (12), despite a brave effort, had to pull up half way round the course.
Finally it was the longest race of the day, the 5k, featuring Luke Ford (17) and Nigel Halford (53). Luke won a county silver medal while Nigel won a regional silver medal in the 50-59 year category.
