Bedford Modern School Year 9 students Katie Sumner and Maddie Kent became the National Schools U14 Rugby Fives Doubles Champions at the Girls’ Championships at Marlborough College, Wiltshire.
This is the second time the girls have entered the competition after claiming the U13 Doubles title last year.
After a long day and many hard fought matches the girls faced a tough challenge in the final against a pair from Malvern College. There were some great serves in the match and the girls won the final game by 11 points to one.
Katie, 14, said: “We really wanted to defend our title this year. Rugby Fives is a very competitive sport so we are really happy to have done so well!”
Maddie added: “I felt really proud to take home our trophies and medals as we’ve trained so hard.”
The girls also achieved medal positions in the singles competition. Maddie got through to the quarter finals while Katie was the U14 Rugby Fives Singles Champion.
Phil Smith, BMS Fives and Fencing teacher, said: “Both girls showed amazing stamina, they faced stiff competition in the final but performed exceptionally well and we are very proud of them.”
