With the students flying high in fourth place in the East Prem and always a safe bet to finish the season strongly, Bedford knew they were in for a tough match from the outset.

Bedford were quickest out of the blocks and within a minute found themselves 1-0 up after Charlotte Holland forced a penalty corner which captain Rachel Jackson neatly tucked home on the half volley after her initial strike was saved and a good advantage played by the umpires.

Cambridge created a few glorious chances themselves in the first half and were unlucky not to get back on level terms.

But credit must go to the entire Bedford defence who made some excellently timed tackles throughout the game and confidentially withstood a lot of pressure.

Bedford had some success playing on the counter-attack before half-time, without being able to extend their lead.

In the second half, again it was a highly competitive encounter. Leanne Sargeant in the Bedford goal made a number of sharp saves and the Maroons were able to extend their lead as Andrea Mason tapped home a rebound follow a shot which the uni keeper blocked.

As the game wore on, Bedford’s quality began to show and player of the match Becky Childs was prominent with some fine runs.

Cambridge did pull a goal back to set up a tense last 10 minutes, but Bedford saw the game out and pressed the students back, maintaining a high work rate.

They were rewarded with a fine third goal; Kate Costin and Mason combined with a couple of one-twos up the pitch in a fast break, before Costin slid in Rebecca Budd who made no mistake with a composed finish for her second BHC goal to wrap up the victory.
