Shefford hit Dunton for six in league opener

THE opening day of the Bedfordshire County League saw the top Premier Division honours go to Shefford Town & Campton who thrashed Dunton 6-1 at the Carlsberg Stadium.

Andy Hayday shot them into a 23rd minute lead but his goal was cancelled out by Barry Emery from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half.

But from then on it was a case of one-way traffic as Dan Webb restored Town’s lead before Hayday complete his hat-trick along with a Michael Jones penalty and a strike from Ricky Smith.

For last season’s champions Blunham there was a 1-0 defeat at Flitwick Town with Dean Warren netting a 90th minute penalty to give his side the three points.

Also winning 1-0 on home soil were Caldecote thanks to a 32nd minute strike from Tom Cookman enough to see off Renhold United. Bedford Hatters marked their first ever game in the Premier Division with a 2-0 home win over Wilshamstead thanks to a Simon Pixley double.

It was a different story for newly-promoted Potton Wanderers who were beaten 2-1 at home by Sharnbrook whose goals came from Luke Devine and Darren Wallinger against a Danny Fox reply.

Arlesey Town Reserves made a winning start with a 2-1 win against AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College at the Armadillo Stadium. Alex Coppin was the Blues hero with both goals against a lone reply from Dave Kane.

The seventh and final scheduled fixture between Oakley Sports and Woburn was postponed when the visitors failed to raise a side.

In Division One there were just three games and top honours went to Caldecote Reserves who emerged 5-3 winners at Westoning. Matt Basta bagged a hat-trick and Ricky Aris a brace against home replies from Tom Smith (two) and Glenn Cooksley.

For Lidlington United Sports there was a 3-1 home win over Luton Boys after Alex Burrows netted twice and Darren Sims once against a lone reply from Ricardo Green.

In the third game between Marston Shelton Rovers and Henlow it ended all square at 2-2, Jim Burraway and Jamie Cerminara both on the Rovers scoresheet with replies from Andy Newton and Neil Spencer.

There were six game in Division Two and just one resulted in an home win as Pavenham were 4-1 victors over M & DH Oakley. James Owen, Rob Heany, Tom Roger and Nick Atkins were on the scoresheet for the hosts and Alfie Fuller for te visitors.

Newly-promoted AFC Turvey won 4-1 at Bromham United thanks to Mark Allen, John Guiney, Jason Smith and Tim Clarke with Tom Prothero replying from the penalty spot.

For Elstow Abbey there was a 3-0 win at Queens Park Crescents with goals from Glen Tumulty on 23 minutes and Dave McCarthy 10 minutes later, Ed L’Erario adding the third on the final whistle.

The third away winners were Stopsley Park, 4-3 at Clifton. Rob Wilson (two), Simon Richards and Dean Abrahams outweighed home strikes from Tony Norman (two) and Will Pitts.

The remaining two games both ended in stalemate. Shefford Town & Campton Reserves drew 3-3 draw with Great Barford with goals from Jordan Robbens,Tom Scurfield and Eddie Kemp against replies from Joe Rowley, Johnathon Prior and Adam Dunville, while Sundon Park Rangers were held 1-1 at home by Marabese Ceramics, Matt Conway scoring for Rangers and Romano Marabese for the visitors.

The Division Three programme also had an away win theme, three of the five games going the visitors way. Biggest winners of the day were Goldington who ran out 8-1 victors at Kempston Hammers Sports. Karl Anderson bagged a hat-trick, Jordan Kumar a brace and singles from James Morris, Justin Muircroft and Chris Hutchinson with James Robinson scoring for the Hammers.

Nwly-promoted Potton Town won 4-0 at Dinamo Flitwick thanks to a Chris Cooper hat-trick and a single from James Pyman while Westoning Reserves won 3-1 at Wilshamstead Reserves thanks to James Bennett (two) and Steve Bernat with Chris McGurn being Wilstead’s scorer.

Another newly-promoted club enjoying a win were Eastcotts. They were 4-1 home over winners against Royal Oak Kempston after goals from Liam Parker (two), Michael Sexton and Oliver Bates with the lone reply from Lorenzo Jordan.

Renhold Village won 4-2 at home against league newcomers Sundon Park Rangers Colts. Marko Tobdzic hit a brace and Carl Townsend and Dan Luke one apiece with Chris Scott and Kevin Hilton scoring for Rangers.

The game between Cranfield United Reserves and Flitwick Town Reserves was postponed after the visitors failed to raise a sidel.

Away wins were the order of the day in Division Four when top scorers were Clifton Reserves who beat Sandy Reserves 5-2 thanks to goals from George King (three including two penaties) and Luke Baverstock (two) against replies from Sandy’s Johnny Stafford (two).

League newcomers Marsh Leys won 3-1 win at Wootton Village with Matthew Evans (two, one penalty) and Alex Chipston on target against a Village reply from Adam Flynn.

The third away winners were Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves. They beat Stewartby Village 2-1 after two goals from Jake Evans with Lee Collis replying for the Village.

Lone home winners were Kempston Athletic who beat newcomers Dinamo Flitwick Reserves 4-1 thanks to Gary Whitbread (two), Dee Sayio and James Maxwell with the Dinamo reply from Matthew Widdowson.

The two other games finished all square. Dunton ‘A’ and Shefford Town & Campton ‘A’ played out a 2-2 draw after Jack Stent scored twice for the hosts and Wayne Haxton and Andy Goddard for the visitors. Meanwhile Caldecote ‘A’ required a 90th minute strike from Dan Fennell to earn them a point in a 1-1 draw at Bedford Park Rangers who had taken the lead after an own goal.
