Pilkington: Title hopes all but over

HATTERS captain George Pilkington all but wrote off his side’s Blue Square Bet Premier title chances after their goalless draw against Mansfield Town last night, writes Mike Simmonds.

With Wrexham slipping up the evening before, losing 1-0 at Forest Green Rovers, the door was slightly ajar for Luton to reduce the gap at the top, but they failed miserably in a dour stalemate.

Pilkington, who was making his 150th Town appearance, said: “We’ve got to almost forget the top two now and consolidate our position in the play-offs.

“The last two seasons in the Conference we’ve been chasing Stevenage and Crawley, so it’s not a new position for ourselves.

“We’ve got to not think about kicking on too much and just think about taking each game and keep amounting points as we go.

“That was one of those games that probably the top teams may have gone on to get three points and that’s what we’ve got to try and instil in ourselves.

“We need to get that siege or winning mentality and turn those tight 0-0 draws into three points.

“They’ve (Wrexham) been pretty relentless and Fleetwood are chasing them. They’ve both got strong squads and when the games are tight, they seem to be able to battle their way out of it and find a goal from somewhere.

“We want to do things the right way and at times we just need to be a little bit more direct and ruthless.

“It’s that missing ingredient that we’re lacking a bit, I don’t know what it is.”

New signing Craig McAllister also admitted it would now take a miracle to catch both Fleetwood and Wrexham as he said: “We’ll be digging in as hard as we can to catch the two above us and that’s all we can do.

“We have to believe we can do it. If we don’t then we start disbelieving about the play-off position and start letting yourself slip on that and the next thing you know is you’ll be out of the play-offs.

“We can just keep winning our own games. It’ll be difficult for both of them to slip up, they’ve got a great margin.

“We can only worry about our own game by game and for some miraculous miracle that they lose a few on the bounce.”
