It was a night to forget for Bedford Town on Tuesday as they lost 3-1 to Royston Town and were reduced to nine men before the final whistle.
The game didn’t start well for Bedford as they found themselves 1-0 down when Luke Robins was allowed to score from an Erkan Okay cross.
Midway through the half, the home side increased their lead when Tyler Reading kept out Rhys Hoenes, but the rebound fell kindly to Okay, who slotted into an empty net.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, and Bedford were climbing a mountain.
A misplaced pass was intercepted by Hoenes, and he fed Robins to slot the ball past the exposed Reading for 3-0.
Bedford pulled a goal back after an hour as Josh Bamford found Serigne Mor Diop on the edge of the area, and the striker swept a lovely shot past Ron Yates and into the net. Unfortunately, this was as good as it got for Bedford as they were soon down to 10 men.
Ryan Ingrey burst through on goal and was brought down by Reading. As last man, Reading was given his marching orders, with sub keeper Maxime Fondop Siwe coming on and pushing Robins’ penalty kick over the bar.
With the extra man, Royston pushed forward but found Siwe in fine form as he saved shots from Robins, Ingrey and Hoenes.
The game became niggly at the end, and resulted in a second red card for Bedford in stoppage time as Daril Ngwala was send off for pushing his marker in the face.
Referee, Ellis Clark, had no choice but to produce another red card and for the last few seconds of the game and Bedford were down to nine men.
The defeat sends Bedford down to 13th in the league, and they are back in FA Trophy action on Saturday when Weymouth Premier Division side Weymouth visit the Eyrie. The game kicks off at 3pm.
