With 20 minutes on the clock, Gareth Seddon’s acrobatic shot looked to have been blocked by the raised hands of Town defender Steve McNulty.

Young, who has seen his side now hold Hatters, Cambridge, Kidderminster and Grimsby at the Swansway Chester Stadium, said: “I felt we deserved a penalty in the first half, it’s hit the defender with his hands up in the air, so surely that’s a penalty.

“We’ve done well against the top teams and we seem to do better against the footballing sides in this league, Kidderminster, Grimsby, Cambridge and now Luton have all come here and not beaten us.

“So to do that against four top sides and four top managers is a credit to us and we’ve just got to make sure when chances do come along we take them. But I do believe we should have had a penalty.”

On the performance from his side, who sit in the lower reaches of the Skrill Premier, Young continued: “I thought we played very well against a very good Luton side and we looked about 20 years of age running around.

“I know some people were wanting us to go for it, but Luton have been on a massive run so it was important that we took something from the game rather than risking not taking anything.

“We were excellent all over the pitch and we’ve seen a confidence about us.

“You only have to look at the players they’ve got and the lads on the bench plus the ones that aren’t even in the squad, so they are a class act.

“People have to be realistic. I know people want me to play two up front, but we have to take something from the game.

“If we’d gone two up top towards the end of the game I felt we’d have left ourselves open further back as we were tiring and in the last 10 minutes we were out on our feet.”

The Chester boss also admitted he had tried to sign Town goalscorer Andre Gray when he was at Hinckley three years ago.

The forward netted his seventh of the season early on, but Young was delighted with how his side reacted, adding: “Andre was a player I tried to sign from Hinckley when I first got the Chester job.

“His goal came after Luton had come flying out of the blocks, he’s a great striker.

“We reacted well after their goal, so there is a bit of resilience coming from us at the moment.

“The lads did exactly what we’d told them to do, we were concerned with Luke Gutteridge as I’ve seen the dvd’s and how he likes to come off the line and get in behind our defenders and cause chaos.

“We knew what we’d be up against and I thought that tactically we were spot on.”
