The 18-year-old striker departed Kenilworth Road for Premier League Fulham two years ago, in a deal £150,000 followed by more payments, and has signed on loan for a month with the Shrimpers.

So far this season he has scored three times in four reserve matches for Fulham, and said: “It’s going to be tough playing against defenders who are much bigger than me but I’m looking forward to the challenge and it’s exactly what I need.

“It’s been an aim of mine to get out on loan and play in matches that really matter with points to play for and I’m very happy to have come to Southend.

“I watched the game at Wycombe on Saturday and thought the lads were very unlucky to lose.

“I could also see they played some good football and that will definitely suit me, so hopefully I can fit in well.”

Woodrow has requested the same squad number 33 he had at Luton and new boss, former Hull City manager, has likened him to former Manchester United and current Cardiff City striker Fraizer Campbell in potential.

He added: “There are a lot of people talking about Cauley but his career hasn’t really started yet and it was like when Frazier Campbell first came to Hull City,” said Brown.

“We came out of the Championship and brought him in from Manchester United.

“We knew he had potential right away and Cauley reminds me of that kind of character.

“He wants to impress and hopefully he can on Saturday but there’s real competition for places there now too.”
