Woking defeat was a case of ‘wood’ you believe it for Luton

Whereas Luton were denied by the post three times in the game, the Cards saw an effort rebound off the bar and straight into the path of substitute Giuseppe Sole to score the winner with three minutes to go.

Robinson lamented: “I don’t think we started particularly well. The two midfielders and another one were coming in from the wing which took us a bit of time to grasp and they were getting quite a few shots from the edge of the box.

“But then I thought in the second half we turned it around and added quite a lot of pressure and maybe could have snatched a goal ourselves, but sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, it hits the crossbar, we’ve hit the post three times in a row, ours hasn’t fallen to anyone and theirs hits the crossbar and falls straight to a man.”

A foul on Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu was ignored in the build-up to Woking’s winner, while Town were also denied what looked like a clear penalty in the second half when Josh Payne appeared to trip Andre Gray in the box.

Robinson said: “He nutmegged the guy. Obviously like most penalties you’ve seen them given, but then again you’ve seen worse ones not given and I’ll be honest, I think he did trip him, I don’t think Dre’s the type of player to go down if he’s not fouled, but obviously the referee didn’t give it this time so hopefully that’s some good karma to turn up for us the next time we have a penalty decision.”

It was Robinson’s 21st appearance of the season and his first start since the 3-0 victory over Nuneaton in January.

Set-piece training had given him an inkling he may be involved, as he said: “I did have (a feeling) as of yesterday when we were doing set-pieces, that’s normally quite a good indication.

“I had seen Pelly had been struggling the week before, and you’ve just got to prepare for the game the same you would every week and just when the starting XI is named you’ve just got to be ready to do what you need to do.”

And he admitted they had struggled against the Cards on the night, who impressed massively as they ended Luton’s record 27-game unbeaten league run.

Robinson added: “It was a very tough game, they’ve recently had a very good run of form and obviously as the fans know so have we, 27 games unbeaten and we haven’t lost a league game at Kenilworth Road this year.

“It was a surprise the way they came at us. I think we could have dealt with certain things better, but it’s just how it goes sometimes.”
