The winger was signed from Southport in the summer and was in sparkling form during Town’s pre-season matches.

But after missing a penalty on his return to Haig Avenue during Hatters’ 1-0 defeat on the opening day, he has been reduced to a role on the bench for most of the season.

Whalley said: “I love playing for the manager, I love playing for Luton, but for some reason it’s just not happened for me and it’s really disappointing.

“I just want us to do well and get us promoted, so hopefully now I can show my true quality and kick on from here.”

On why Whalley’s form hasn’t quite reached the expected heights yet, boss John Still said: “Shaun came in, he looked really bright at the start of the season.

“Then it’s settling in, moving down, getting his girlfriend down, her finding work, all that sort of stuff, it takes time for people to settle.
“We know he’s a good player, he’s had to wait for his time because the team’s doing well. But he gets the ball at his feet, he runs at people and he’s really difficult to stop.”

Whalley took the responsibilty from the spot again last week as he netted his first Town goal in the 3-3 draw with Aldershot, and hopes he will get the chance to show Town fans just what he is capable of.

He added: “Everything’s been perfect, all the lads are great, I’m getting on with everyone.

“I know myself, I wasn’t good enough at the start of the season for my standards and for the teams standards.

“I’ve just been working hard in training, I want to get my chances again.

“The lads have been doing brilliant so I’ve got no complaints with that. Hopefully now I can show my true quality and kick on from here.”
