Hatters striker Alex Wall issued an immediate apology to Cambridge United defender Tom Bonner after the U’s man suffered a nasty leg injury during the FA Trophy third round clash yesterday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The pair were involved in a committed 50/50 challenge in the first half that saw Bonner come off worse and after lengthy treatment, was stretchered to hospital.

Wall, who scored Town’s second goal in the 2-2 draw, said: “I’d like to start off by saying I’d like to know what happened to him.

“I didn’t go with any intent there and I hope he’s all right and makes a quick recovery.

“It was a 50/50 ball, and I’m not going to give up on those balls whatsoever.

“It could have been me that came out like that. I’m not going in to make any harm at all, I’m going in for the ball and unfortunately he’s come out worse and hopefully he makes a speedy recovery.”

On Twitter, a number of Cambridge players voiced their support as former Town defender Greg Taylor tweeted: “Thoughts are with @tombonner_ tonight as he had to go to hospital! Let’s hope it’s not too bad.”

While ex-Luton loanee Michael Spillane also tweeted: “Thoughts with @tombonner_ tonight.. A top bloke and proffesional and gutted for him! come back stronger bro!”
