Walker admits it could have been 10 in ‘insulting’ defeat

Distraught Dan Walker was at a loss to explain Luton abysmal 5-1 defeat at Gateshead on Saturday, and admitted it could have been far worse, writes Mark Wood.

The despondent 22-year-old winger said: I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a game where we’ve been beaten so badly. It just felt like it could have been 10 to be honest, we were just nowhere near it.”

Walker netted his second goal of the season with a deft left-foot volley from Dave Martin’s cross to make it 2-1 in the first half, but it mattered little to the shell-shocked attacker.

“I’d much rather have taken a win any day than not scored myself because it was embarrassing,” he confessed.

“I was pleased to start but disappointed now because the whole team were poor.

“I can’t even take a positive from the goal because I’m so disappointed with not only myself but with the whole group of lads.

“I don’t think any of us expected that. I just think everybody collectively wasn’t good enough, individually and as a team we just weren’t at it.

“There’s nothing I can say to make it any better we just weren’t good enough.”

Town’s players were bombarded by abuse from Luton’s 126 supporters who had made the massive trek north to Carlisle on Saturday and admitted it felt like an ‘insult’ going to clap them at the end.

He said: “I feel sorry for every single one of them. We should be coming to places like this and at least getting a draw, and we’ve just been outplayed completely.

“Honestly I think every single players would admit that they weren’t good enough. We’ve just got to go back to training, try to work out what went wrong so badly and move on from here and hopefully get some results the last five games of the season.”

He hopes Town have finally reached rock bottom with the only way up too, adding: “I hope that we can’t get any lower than that because I don’t think all the fans and the players themselves can put up with much more of that.

“We’ve got to bounce back straight away and I hope we can Tuesday.”
