Two goals from on-loan Crystal Palace striker Kwesi Appiah and Josh Gillies’ effort were enough for United, who still have a game in hand over Luton.

Other results went Hatters’ way though as third placed Kidderminster Harriers suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at Woking, with on-loan Luton forward Scott Rendell netting the only goal.

They are now five points behind Town, with a game in hand too, as they host Alfreton on Saturday.

Grimsby in fifth needed a last-minute goal from Dayle Southwell to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Welling United.

In the division’s other game, Gateshead continued their push for the play-offs with a 1-0 win at Lincoln.
