UPDATED: New Hatters signing Viana has the potential to be ‘anything’ declares Still

The former Portugal U19 midfielder was signed on a contract until the end of the season on Monday, and could even figure in Still’s squad for Saturday’s visit of FC Halifax Town.

And he believes the 21-year-old French-born player who was released by Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake in the summer has the ability to dazzle at Kenilworth Road in the future.

Speaking about the former Strasbourg and Atletico Madrid B and C team player at today’s press conference, he said: “David Viana. Technically very good, good touch, good movement, clever with the ball.

“He’s an attacking player, not a defending player, very clever with the ball, moves it early, moves it well, sees a pass, sees a shot and at his age, I think 21, he comes into that category really where his career can be anything.

“As you know I like young hungry players, and he’s young enough and he’s certainly hungry enough.”

Viana’s addition has been something of a snip according to Still and he’s still discovering what the youngster is capable of.

He continued: “It was quite a small investment in terms of salary so he just wanted to play.

“He came over to play in England, he wants to make a career in England and he’s done very, very well in what we’ve done so far, but I’ll let him settle down a little bit and gradually I hope all the skills come out.

“And once we can see the skills we can then start working with him a bit more on what we need to improve in him.

“But I just want him to relax at the moment and show us what he’s got in his locker.”

Viana impressed over a series of development games and Still believes they are the perfect place for him to get to grips with the ‘hurly-burly’ of the Conference.

“I think the development games are ideal,” said Still.

“He’s played in a couple, Stevenage and Northampton and they don’t come more competitive than those two and he played at Brentford in fact as well.

“So he’s played in some hurly-burly games, and he’s dealt with it quite comfortably I think.

Still wants to give Viana the chance to settle properly before plunging him in, but hasn’t ruled out using him in the near future.

He added: “If I felt I should use him now I would do. He’s a boy that’s come from abroad. It’s not like he’s an experienced player that’s travelled the world.

“I’d like to see all of his skills first, I’d like to see what he’s got, what he hasn’t got, what he needs to add.

“I’ve seen bits of it but that’s really where I am. I don’t really think I’m looking at him long, long, long term, if I’m talking long term with him I’m talking a couple of months as opposed to a year.

“I just need him to settle down. He’s been living in a hotel since he’s been here, but he’s found a place to stay and all of those things can be important.

“Because it’s important that when they do get their opportunity that they’re in a position where they can show what they can do.

“I wouldn’t want him to be put in too early and him be chasing the game rather than running the game.”
