Town boss John Still revealed at today’s press conference that Davis had been recalled by the Valiants due to injuries at Vale Park.

He said: “Joe Davis has gone back, Alfie Mawson has gone back.

“Joe got called back because they’ve got an injury at Port Vale, so he got called back.”

Mawson, meanwhile, heads back to the Bees after an unfortunate spell that had seen him injured on his Hatters debut.

And with Mawson unable to figure in Saturday’s FA Trophy tie at Cambridge United, Still continued: “The one we feel sorry for is Alfie, because Alfie actually started in front of Joe, cut his foot, had to miss a couple of games, Joe came in and settled in brilliantly and done well.

“And being a young man I didn’t want to keep him here if perhaps he wasn’t going to play.

“He can’t play Saturday, and I thought if I bring someone in that plays Saturday is he going to be in the same position?”

Still though hinted he could be tempted to link up with Mawson again in the future, adding: “I’m not saying we won’t revisit, but we will be bringing someone else in for a month, that can play in anything.

“So that’s what we’re going to do at the moment, I’m not saying we won’t revisit Alfie because I really like him, I just felt that we needed someone for Saturday.”
