James, 43, who has played for the likes of Liverpool, Portsmouth and arch rivals Watford has well over 900 appearances to his name, and is currently studying for his coaching A licence.

The stopper has commanded fees totalling almost £10million during his career and is currently a pundit for BT Sport.

But he is busy studying the game at all levels as he bids to one day go into management.

Hatters boss John Still said: “David has come in, he’s doing his A licence and he wants a bit of help with that.

“He’s a Luton supporter, he comes from local.

“From our point of view , whether it was David or someone else that I know in football, if they wanted a bit of help we’ve all got to help each other, we would let them come in and do that.

“And while he’s here, we can lean on his little bit of knowledge and little bit of experience that he might be able to bring to us and he might want to lean on our little bit of knowledge and experience to bring to him if he’s going to embark on another career as he’s going to need as much help and assistance as he can get.”
