Uncertain future behind Thomas’ switch to Luton

Unpaid wages and uncertainty over his future was the trigger for Town new boy Wayne Thomas to end his Mediterranean adventure, writes Mark Wood.

Having enjoyed an immensely successful season with top Greek side Atromitos, Thomas went with his heart over his head to sign a two-year deal with Cypriot side Alki Larnaca.

But, having played in all their pre-season games, he was never picked for a competitive fixture and left after a month when his wages dried up.

And things went from bad to worse when he then signed for another Greek side Veroia and, after playing just a handful of fixtures, until funding again vanished, leaving him in dispute with both clubs through Fifa.

He said: “I think it’s a little bit harsh to be expected to stay and play. I’m a 110 per cent player.

“It made me appreciate what is it like over here. I’ve become a stronger person for that and a batter player for it all.”

Thomas’s family had accompanied him over for his first stint abroad, but for the season he had been living apart from his family and is hoping to thrive now that they are so much nearer.

He added: “I really would hope so. I’m two and a half hours down the road and my son and wife are looking forward to coming to see home games again.

“It was primarily (why I came back). I missed my family terribly.

“I would rather come back to England and know where I am and be secure rather than go back there and be offered the world and it doesn’t mean anything.”
