Tyler quick to play down his heroics

MODEST Hatters keeper Mark Tyler played down his brilliant instinctive stop that earned Luton a potentially invaluable point at Gateshead on Tuesday night, writes Mark Wood.

His reaction save diverted substitute Greg Taylor’s late miskick past the post as Town clung on for a goalless draw at the International Stadium.

Tyler said: “We were chasing the game by that point because we wanted the three points.

“Greg’s sliced his clearance and I’ve just stuck a hand out. Luckily it’s spun past the post, you’ve just got to be on your toes.

“We were going all guns blazing at the end and that’s probably why we were a bit open.”

It was Town’s fourth clean sheet in a row under new boss Paul Buckle and Tyler was delighted with their new-found solidity.

He said: “The boys did the defensive work and defend corners really well.

“We’ve been working on that because we’ve been shocking before the new gaffer’s come in.

“It starts from the front. Fleets (Stuart Fleetwood), Andre (Gray) and Robbie (Willmott) have been terrific the last four or five games.

“Pilks (George Pilkington) and Janos (Kovacs) have been solid but it’s a team game and luckily I’m the one that gets the clean sheets.”

Captain George Pilkington was full of praise for the 35-year-old keeper, saying: “Mark’s pulled off an unbelievable save and I don’t know how he’s done that.

“We’ve worked a lot on set-pieces defensively and we’ve conceded quite a few goals off set-pieces prior to the last few games.

“I hate talking about clean sheets because it’s a jinx – but we’ve seemed to put that right and there’s not too many teams that carve us open.

“We work hard to press from the front and work certain ways in midfield to push on.

“If everyone ahead of the defence does that it makes the defenders’ job a lot easier.”

Boss Paul Buckle also hailed Tyler’s contribution, adding: “My eyes over the five games have normally been focused on their goal because we’ve done so much of the attacking.

“We had to soak up a bit of pressure and Tyles has made a great save at the end.”
